Rick Buckler, the former drummer of The Jam, has passed away at the age of 69, confirmed by his former bandmates on social media.

The Jam, a band that gained prominence during the late 1970s punk and new wave movement, is renowned for sparking a resurgence in mod fashion and music.

The band was fronted by Paul Weller, the lead singer and guitarist, who expressed his sorrow on social media, stating he was “shocked and saddened” by Buckler’s passing.

Bass guitarist Bruce Foxton also shared his grief, saying he was “devastated” by the news.

In a statement, Rick Buckler’s family remembered him as a “loving husband, father, and grandfather,” who was deeply devoted to those around him and will be “greatly missed.”

They also shared that Buckler “passed away peacefully on Monday evening in Woking after a short illness, surrounded by family.”

The Jam, the band Buckler was part of, achieved 18 consecutive UK top 40 singles from their breakthrough hit in 1977 until their split in December 1982.

The band’s four number one hits included classics like “Going Underground” and “A Town Called Malice.”

Buckler and Foxton later formed a new band called From the Jam, while Paul Weller went on to achieve success with The Style Council and his solo career.

Recently, Buckler had to cancel a spoken-word tour of UK venues due to health issues.

Weller expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, “I’m shocked and saddened by Rick’s passing. I’m reminiscing about us rehearsing in my bedroom on Stanley Road, Woking, playing in local pubs and clubs, and eventually making a record. What a journey!”

Foxton also shared his grief, saying, “I was shocked and devastated to hear the very sad news today. Rick was a great guy and an incredible drummer whose innovative patterns helped shape our music. I’m grateful for the time we worked together. My thoughts are with Leslie and his family during this difficult time.”

Rhoda Dakar, the lead singer of the ska band The Bodysnatchers, which gained popularity alongside The Jam, also paid her respects.

She stated, “A band is only as good as its drummer, and Rick was a bloody good one.”

Dakar also expressed her condolences, saying, “My sincere condolences to his family and friends. Don’t waste a day – tomorrow isn’t promised.”

The cause of Buckler’s death has not yet been disclosed.
