St. Louis Cardinals catcher Iván Herrera was unable to put weight on his left leg and needed assistance to leave the field after running the bases during the first game of a day-night doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.

The team later announced that Herrera is dealing with inflammation in his left knee. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol shared during an ESPN broadcast in Game 2 that initial tests showed no structural damage in Herrera’s knee. However, he confirmed that the injury would require Herrera to be placed on the injured list.

“Everything came back clean, which is good,” Marmol said. “It could have been a lot worse.”

Herrera had been running from first to third on a third-inning single by Nolan Arenado when the injury occurred. After the play, Luken Baker fouled out to first, and Marmol, along with an athletic trainer, helped Herrera back to the dugout. Herrera then received further assistance down the steps to the clubhouse.

He was substituted by Pedro Pagés in the bottom of the inning.

In the second game, Herrera made an impressive diving catch to force out Connor Wong at the plate on a grounder to third, managing to keep his foot on the plate as he lunged to his right.
