Former Health Secretary Xavier Becerra has officially entered the race to become California’s next governor, joining a crowded field of Democratic candidates. His candidacy could significantly alter the race, especially if former Vice President Kamala Harris decides to run.

Becerra, a Stanford Law School graduate, brings extensive government experience, having served as California’s attorney general, a U.S. House representative, and a state legislator. In December 2020, President Joe Biden appointed him to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, where he played a key role in managing the administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Addressing California’s ongoing affordability crisis, Becerra emphasized the challenges facing working families, including soaring housing costs, grocery prices, and utility expenses. “The California Dream is slipping away,” he stated when announcing his campaign.

With Governor Gavin Newsom term-limited and set to leave office in early 2027, the race has attracted a wide range of candidates. This list could shift dramatically if Harris enters the fray. Other prominent Democrats in the race include former U.S. Representative Katie Porter, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis.

On the Republican side, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco has also entered the race, criticizing Democratic leadership for the state’s homelessness crisis and skyrocketing housing costs.

Becerra, known for his calm demeanor, vowed to confront those who stand in the way of progress, a likely reference to former President Donald Trump. During his time as California’s attorney general, Becerra became known for challenging the Trump administration on various fronts, from healthcare to environmental policies.

Critics may target Becerra’s role during the pandemic, particularly California’s stringent lockdowns, which some argue negatively impacted education and the economy.

Drawing from his personal background, Becerra often speaks about his working-class roots. His mother, born in Jalisco, Mexico, immigrated to the U.S. after marrying his father, a Sacramento native with Mexican heritage. “My parents came to California with $12 in their pockets. They built a life they were proud of,” Becerra said. “That’s the promise of California, and I will fight to ensure it’s still within reach for everyone.”
