Elon Musk’s social media platform X has rejected recent accusations from French prosecutors, who allege data tampering and fraud. In a public statement on Monday, the platform called the claims politically driven and without merit.

Earlier this month, the Paris prosecutor’s office revealed that it had launched an investigation into two potential offenses involving an “automated data processing system.” While the specifics were not disclosed, these offenses could carry a prison sentence of up to 10 years under French law.

X responded by accusing French authorities of using the investigation as a tool to push a political agenda. According to the platform, the probe involves allegations of algorithm manipulation and unauthorized data extraction. “X categorically denies these allegations,” the company stated via its Global Government Affairs account.

The investigation stems from information submitted in January by two individuals—one a member of the French parliament and the other a high-ranking official in a government institution. The names of the individuals and the institution involved have not been disclosed. The complaints reportedly include suspicions that X’s algorithm was used for “foreign interference,” although no further details were given.

X stated that it remains unaware of the exact nature of the allegations but believes that French legal provisions are being misused in a way that threatens free expression. “Based on what we know so far, X believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech,” the platform said.

As part of the ongoing investigation, French prosecutors confirmed that they had formally requested X grant police access to its algorithm. This request was sent in a letter last week. Authorities assured that only those directly involved in the investigation would have access and that confidentiality would be maintained.

So far, X has not issued an official response to the request.
