The Piney-Pinecreek Border Airport, located near Roseau, Minnesota, and Piney, Manitoba, has a unique distinction—its runway spans across the U.S.-Canada border. However, after over 70 years of operation, the airport will permanently close on Friday. The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced earlier this month that the airport has seen very little traffic and faces significant maintenance costs, including repairs to the runway, apron, and terminal. Additionally, the international agreement that allows the airport to operate expires on December 26, and neither of the airport’s owners will be renewing it.

The Piney-Pinecreek Border Airport opened in 1953 with a grass runway, which was replaced with a paved runway in 1978. It is one of six airports located on the U.S.-Canada border, and the only one with a paved runway. The airport was frequently used by Americans traveling to Canada for hunting and fishing trips. The international agreement in place allowed airport staff to move freely between the two countries for work without having to go through the usual customs procedures.
