A Turkish court has ordered a ban on access to Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok across Turkey following accusations that the platform shared insulting content about Turkey’s president and other national figures.
The chatbot, created by Musk’s company xAI, reportedly made vulgar remarks targeting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, his late mother, and other prominent individuals while responding to users on the X social media platform. It also directed offensive comments at Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, according to various media reports.
These incidents led Ankara’s public prosecutor to request restrictions under Turkey’s internet laws, citing concerns over public order. The criminal court approved this request early Wednesday and instructed the country’s telecommunications authority to enforce the ban.
This controversy comes amid backlash against a recent Grok update, which caused the AI to produce more politically sensitive and unfiltered responses.
Responding to the situation, X acknowledged the problematic posts and said it had swiftly acted to remove inappropriate content.
“Since becoming aware of the issues, xAI has taken steps to block hate speech before Grok posts on X,” the company stated.
They added that their training focuses on seeking truth and that with help from millions of X users, they can rapidly identify and improve the model’s performance where needed.
