Tulane QB Darian Mensah reportedly to enter NCAA transfer portal

Another notable college football quarterback is heading to the transfer portal.

Tulane quarterback Darian Mensah is expected to enter the transfer portal when it officially opens on Monday, according to multiple reports. The redshirt freshman is anticipated to be one of the top quarterbacks available, given his strong performance and three years of eligibility remaining.

Darian Mensah, a first-year starter in 2024, secured the starting quarterback role over former blue-chip Oregon quarterback Ty Thompson, who was a junior in his first season with Tulane. The 6-foot-3 quarterback threw for 2,723 yards, completing 189 of 287 passes (65.9%) with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also contributed 132 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

Darian Mensah led Tulane to the American Athletic Conference championship game on Friday, where they were defeated by Army 35-14. Overall, Tulane finished the season with a 9-4 record, with losses to Power Five teams Kansas State and Oklahoma, against whom Mensah performed admirably.

Mensah’s career-high in passing yards is 342, achieved in a near-upset win over Kansas State. He completed 19 of 29 passes, throwing two touchdowns and one interception. In the nonconference matchup against Oklahoma, he finished 14 of 32 passing for 166 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, despite facing the Sooners’ tough defense.

Darian Mensah, a native of San Luis Obispo, California, is not currently ranked in 247Sports’ Composite transfer rankings. However, he is expected to rank much higher than he did coming out of high school, where he was a 2-star recruit, ranked No. 2289 overall and No. 135 among quarterbacks. At that time, his only offers were from Tulane and Idaho State, with Tulane being his eventual choice.

Mensah now joins a group of top transfer portal quarterbacks, including Conner Weigman from Texas A&M, Miller Moss from USC, Jackson Arnold from Oklahoma, and Kaidon Salter from Liberty, with many more quarterbacks expected to enter the portal once it officially opens on Monday.
