Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has selected former professional football player Scott Turner to be the secretary of the US Department of Housing. Turner will serve in a senior position advising the president on addressing the housing needs of middle- and low- income families and increasing homebuying opportunities for Americans. Also, this department will be responsible for monitoring cases of domestic discrimination.
Turner must be confirmed by the Senate for the position. Once approved, they will contribute significantly in their roles. Previously, Turner served as executive director of the White House’s Opportunity and Revitalization Council during Trump’s first term.
According to Trump, unprecedented changes were brought about in the most vulnerable parts of the country under his leadership. Trump’s statement noted that Turner’s efforts have led to the revitalization of various parts of the country.
Turner’s appointment comes at a time when the issue of housing affordability has been at the center of the election campaign. According to a Zillow report, rental housing prices in the U.S. have risen more than 30% since 2019, leaving many families struggling.
Scott Turner’s journey is inspiring. He attended the University of Illinois and started playing in the NFL (National Football League) with the Washington Redskins. After serving in the field for nine years, he won election in his native Texas to become a member of the state assembly.
Under Turner’s leadership, the Opportunity Zones initiative made great strides. Under this economic development initiative, private funds of about 50 billion dollars were made available to invest in remote areas. Many sectors were economically strengthened by this initiative.
With Turner’s selection as secretary of the Department of Housing, his leadership will be critical to solving America’s housing crisis.
