Tommy Paul may have been happy to advance to the second round of the French Open on Sunday, but what really got him talking was a very different kind of comeback — retrieving his Ford F-150 after it was repossessed in Florida.

Seeded 12th at Roland-Garros, Paul overcame a slow start to defeat Denmark’s Elmer Moller 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 in a match marked by swirling wind, spotty rain, and bursts of sunshine on Court Simonne-Mathieu.

After his victory, Paul shared an unexpected off-court story involving his truck. While competing in the Italian Open semifinals earlier this month, he had missed a few payments due to switching banks and forgetting to update his automatic payment settings. That led to the truck being repossessed — something he wasn’t expecting to happen so fast.

“I think I missed three payments. They came and got it — I had no idea it would happen that quickly, especially in the middle of the night,” Paul said. “Now I’ve been watching those repo shows where they grab cars at like 1 a.m. It’s kind of funny, but crazy that it happened while I was overseas. But we got it back.”

Paul found out what happened thanks to his trainer back in Florida, who asked him to check his home’s security cameras to see if any packages had been delivered. Instead, Paul saw something else entirely.

“There weren’t any packages — and there wasn’t a truck either,” he said. Curious, he rewound the footage and was stunned.

“I’m like, ‘What’s going on here? A tow truck is taking my car!’ At first I thought it got stolen,” he explained.

Once he realized it had been repossessed, Paul took to social media, posting the black-and-white security footage of the moment his truck was hauled away — dramatically soundtracked by Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.”
