Tom Hardy Reunites with Guy Ritchie for “MobLand” Series
Tom Hardy, known for his transformative roles in films like The Dark Knight Rises and Venom, has reunited with director Guy Ritchie for the gritty new series MobLand. The two previously worked together on Ritchie’s 2008 film RocknRolla, where Hardy had a supporting role. Reflecting on that early collaboration, Hardy recalled, “I didn’t have much to do with him back then, as Gerard Butler was leading the film. But I got to experience a Guy Ritchie set, which was different from being a lead.”
Now, with both their careers soaring—Ritchie as a renowned director and Hardy as a box office powerhouse—they’ve come full circle. In MobLand, Hardy plays Harry Da Souza, a calm yet menacing fixer for a London crime family tasked with finding a missing rival’s son to prevent a gang war.
Hardy approached the role with a relaxed attitude, joking, “No acting required. Just show up, say the lines, and don’t bump into the furniture.”
The show, streaming on Paramount+, was created by Ronan Bennett and written with Jez Butterworth. Ritchie serves as executive producer and directed the first two episodes. MobLand was originally conceived as a spinoff from Ray Donovan but evolved into its own standalone series.
The cast also features Helen Mirren as Maeve, the manipulative crime family matriarch, and Pierce Brosnan as her mob leader husband. Mirren, who’s had an illustrious career, found the role refreshing, saying, “There are always characters that surprise you. It’s one of the beauties of my job—immersing in different worlds.”
Mirren was also drawn to the project because of Hardy’s involvement. “Tom has this interior power that connects with the camera. He’s got star power,” she remarked.
Brosnan, who reunited with Mirren after working together in The Long Good Friday, was eager to work with Ritchie, describing him as “naughty, cheeky, bold,” and praised his unique cinematic style.
Hardy’s upcoming projects include the crime drama Havoc, a sequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, and a second season of Taboo—nearly a decade after the first. While there were rumors about a Spider-Man and Venom crossover, Hardy clarified, “It was never in the works. I just said I’d love to work with Spider-Man, but it never happened. It’s a shame because my kids would’ve loved it.”
MobLand continues Hardy’s streak of compelling performances, showcasing his versatility and ability to bring complex characters to life.
