Tesla’s electric vehicle sales in Europe dropped by 49% in the first two months of the year compared to the same period last year, even as the overall electric vehicle market grew, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

Tesla has faced criticism for its aging vehicle lineup and a growing backlash against CEO Elon Musk, particularly due to his connections with the Trump administration in the U.S. Musk’s endorsement of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany party during last month’s national election also sparked widespread criticism in Europe.

Additionally, Tesla is now facing increased competition from major automakers, including China’s BYD. On Tuesday, BYD reported a record 777.1 billion yuan ($107 billion) in revenue for 2024, with a 40% rise in sales of its electric and hybrid vehicles. Earlier this month, BYD also introduced a super-fast EV charging system, claiming it’s almost as quick as filling up at a gas station.

Tesla’s sales in Europe for January and February fell to 19,046 units, down from 37,311 during the same period in 2024. This decline occurred despite a 28.4% overall increase in sales of all battery-electric vehicles across Europe.

Elon Musk faced sharp criticism from German politicians and media for supporting the far-right AfD party. Additionally, Tesla vehicles and dealerships have been targeted by protests in both the U.S. and Europe due to Musk’s endorsement of the AfD and his advisory role to U.S. President Donald Trump in significantly shrinking the federal government.

Tesla is experiencing a global sales decline. The company reported its first annual sales drop in over 12 years in January. Furthermore, the Cybertruck has faced multiple recalls, including one last week when nearly all units were recalled due to panels along the sides of the windshield potentially flying off while driving.

This marks the eighth recall of the Cybertruck since deliveries began just over a year ago.
