Sophie Hediger, a member of Switzerland’s snowboard cross team at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, has tragically passed away after an avalanche at a Swiss mountain resort, the country’s skiing federation confirmed on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday at the Arosa resort in Switzerland.

Hediger, 26, competed in the women’s snowboard cross event and the mixed team snowboard cross at the Beijing Games.

She had an impressive 2023-24 season, achieving her first two World Cup podium finishes, with her best result being a second-place finish in St. Moritz in January.
