Shohei Ohtani has officially stepped into a new role—fatherhood.
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ two-way superstar announced on Instagram that he and his wife have welcomed their first child, a baby girl. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed the news during a mid-game interview on Saturday, during the team’s 4-3 loss to the Texas Rangers.
“Congratulations Sho!” Roberts said, though he admitted he didn’t yet know the baby’s name.
Ohtani, 30, missed the first two games of the highly anticipated series between the last two World Series champions. Prior to Saturday’s game, Roberts mentioned he didn’t have any specific updates on the newborn but was hopeful Ohtani would return for Sunday’s series finale.
The Japanese sensation had previously shared that he and his wife, 28-year-old Mamiko Tanaka—a former professional basketball player—were expecting their child in 2025.
“I am so grateful to my loving wife who gave birth to our healthy, beautiful daughter,” Ohtani wrote in his post. “To my daughter, thank you for making us very nervous yet super anxious parents.”
