Selena Gomez is speaking out about her feelings in the midst of controversy surrounding her film Emilia Pérez. The film’s co-star, Karla Sofía Gascón, has come under fire after offensive social media comments of hers resurfaced. During an appearance at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday, Gomez was asked how she was handling the situation.
“I’m good. I’m really good,” Gomez responded. “Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just grateful.”
She added, “I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could,” drawing applause from the audience.
Gascón later addressed the controversy, offering an apology for her past comments. However, she also expressed that she felt she had been unfairly targeted. “I have not committed any crime nor harmed anyone,” she stated. “I am neither racist nor what others have tried to make people believe about me.”
Gascón, a transgender actress, plays a Mexican cartel leader in the film who seeks to stage their own death in order to undergo gender-affirming procedures.
Gascón was accused of referring to Gomez as a “rich rat” in connection with rumors of a feud between Gomez and model Hailey Bieber, who is now married to singer Justin Bieber, with whom Gomez had previously been involved. Gascón denied writing the post, explaining, “Of course that’s not mine. I have never said anything about my partner. I would never refer to her that way.”
Another co-star from Emilia Pérez, actress Zoe Saldaña, also publicly commented on the situation with Gascón. “I’m very sad,” Saldaña shared during a recent episode of the Awards Circuit podcast. “I’m also disappointed.”
