The San Francisco Giants confirmed Saturday that Major League Baseball is investigating serious abuse allegations made by the wife of relief pitcher Sean Hjelle.
Caroline Hjelle posted a video on TikTok showing herself with the couple’s two children, along with a caption alleging that Hjelle left them on Mother’s Day after she discovered his affairs and stood up to what she described as abuse. “So I’ve been raising two boys alone,” she added.
Following Saturday’s game, Sean Hjelle declined to comment directly on the accusations, stating that he and Caroline are in the process of finalizing their divorce. “I feel confident in saying that I will have [a statement] eventually,” Hjelle said. “I don’t have an exact timeline. But I’d like to meet with those handling this situation with me and for me before I make anything official.”
In a statement, the Giants acknowledged they are aware of the situation and said it is being handled by Major League Baseball.
Before Saturday’s matchup against the Boston Red Sox, Giants manager Bob Melvin said Hjelle was still available to pitch. “Obviously, we’re aware of it,” Melvin stated. “He told me about it last night. We talked to MLB. At this point, it’s in their jurisdiction, so I really can’t comment further.”
Hjelle took the loss in Friday’s game against Boston, surrendering a go-ahead home run to Ceddanne Rafaela in the sixth inning. The 6-foot-11 right-hander has appeared in six games this season, with a 1–1 record and a 4.66 ERA.
