The Golden State Warriors are excited about adding Dennis Schroder, believing he will be the ideal backcourt partner to complement Stephen Curry. Curry is eager for the upcoming season, confident that the transition will be smooth and beneficial for both him and the team.
“It’s going to help me, and it will help us,” Curry shared. “What helps me helps the team.”
The Warriors acquired Schroder in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, sending injured guard De’Anthony Melton and Reece Beekman to Brooklyn in return.
The team is especially eager to see Schroder’s contributions on both offense and defense, with his ability to attack the basket and bring a strong defensive presence. Curry praised Schroder’s competitive spirit, saying, “He’s got that ‘Dawg’ in him, you can tell. He’s not overly talkative, but his energy speaks volumes. He’s always in the moment with a fierce attitude, and I respect that.”
Dennis Schroder is set to join the Golden State Warriors on Monday to undergo a physical examination and participate in a few practices before the team’s game against Memphis on Thursday.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr expressed his excitement, saying, “I’m thrilled. I told Dennis today that he’s kicked my (butt) on three different continents.” Kerr recalled Schroder’s impressive performance in the 2022 playoffs against the Warriors while playing for the Lakers, as well as his strong play in FIBA competitions over the past two summers, including the Philippines and an exhibition game in London. Kerr highlighted Schroder’s competitiveness, versatility as a pick-and-roll player, and two-way abilities, calling him a “gamer” and a “competitor.”
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr mentioned that he and his staff will discuss Dennis Schroder’s role with the team, but he sees him as a likely starter, especially given the Warriors’ ongoing search for consistency in their starting lineup.
The trade was initially agreed upon on Saturday, but league rules prevented it from being finalized until Sunday, when De’Anthony Melton’s contract became eligible for a move.
In addition to Schroder, the trade also involved multiple second-round draft picks. Golden State will receive a second-round pick next year, a top-37 protected pick that originally belonged to Miami, while Brooklyn will receive three second-round picks: one in 2026 and one in 2028 (both from Atlanta), along with a 2029 pick from Golden State.
Dennis Schroder has been performing well this season, averaging 18.4 points and 6.6 assists for the Nets, who are currently 10th in the Eastern Conference. However, the trade does not immediately benefit the Nets on the court, as De’Anthony Melton will miss the rest of the season due to recovery from left ACL surgery.
Steve Kerr acknowledged the loss of Melton, saying, “Losing Melt was a huge loss.” He expressed gratitude to both Melton and Reece Beekman for their efforts, commitment, and contributions to the team. Kerr emphasized that while it’s always tough to trade players, this move was necessary to improve the team. He believes Schroder can fill the role Melton played, offering versatility to play both on and off the ball, as well as being an excellent defender with a long wingspan, capable of generating steals, forcing turnovers, and providing pace — all things the Warriors need.
Reece Beekman, who played limited minutes for the Warriors this season, scored two points in two games.
The trade brings the Warriors another shooter to complement Stephen Curry. Schroder, who is shooting a career-high 39% from three-point range and averaging 2.5 made threes per game, gives Golden State additional scoring firepower as they sit fifth in the Western Conference at 14-10 heading into Sunday.
Dennis Schroder will be joining his eighth NBA team in 12 seasons with the Golden State Warriors. Over his career, Schroder has played for Atlanta, Oklahoma City, the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston, Toronto, and Houston, before his time with the Brooklyn Nets. He also played a key role in helping Germany win the 2023 Basketball World Cup title.
Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd praised the move, calling it “a great pickup for the Warriors” and highlighting Schroder’s experience as a veteran who knows how to win.
