Liverpool maintained its seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton on Sunday, but they had to withstand a strong second-half fightback from the relegation-threatened Wolves at Anfield.
Matheus Cunha scored a brilliant long-range goal for Wolves, but first-half goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah were enough to secure the win for Liverpool. The result helped Liverpool keep its lead over second-placed Arsenal.
Liverpool struggled after the break, failing to register a shot on target while Wolves created several chances. Diaz opened the scoring in the 15th minute, bundling the ball over the line from close range. Salah extended the lead with a penalty in the 37th minute after Diaz was fouled in the box. It marked Salah’s 28th goal of the season.
Despite the win, Liverpool’s victory was far from comfortable, as Wolves showed plenty of resilience in their attempt to stage a comeback.
Matheus Cunha pulled one back for Wolverhampton in the 67th minute with a well-executed drag-back and curling shot from around 20 yards, following a sustained period of pressure from the visitors.
Earlier, Marshall Munetsi had a chance to score but was denied when Jarell Quansah made a crucial block to prevent his effort from going in late in the game.
Tottenham is set to face Manchester United later on Sunday.
