Actress Olivia Hussey, who played Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film “Romeo and Juliet,” died on December 27, 2024. She was 73 years old. Her death was confirmed by her friend and filmmaker Mark Eustis. It is believed that she died due to cancer.

Her rise and career:

Olivia Hussey was born on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her father’s name was Andres Osun (popularly known as Oswaldo Ribo), while her mother Joy Hussey was a lawyer from England. After moving to London as a child, she studied acting at the Italia Conti Academy.

At 15, Franco Zeffirelli cast her in the film “Romeo and Juliet.” This film brought her international fame. She was awarded a Golden Globe Award for this role. Her performance was picked up by audiences and critics alike, and the film was also shown in schools.

Other films and contributions:

Her roles in the horror film “Black Christmas” (1974) and in films such as “Death on the Nile” (1978) became notable. She played the Virgin Mary in “Jesus of Nazareth” (1977).

After being diagnosed with cancer in 2008, she patiently underwent treatment. Shortly before her death, she filed a controversial lawsuit against the makers of “Romeo and Juliet” in 2023, but the court dismissed it.

Personal life:

She is survived by her husband David Glen Easley, daughter India Easley, and two sons Alexander Gunther Martin and Maximilian Hussey Fuss.
