Presley Chweneyagae, the acclaimed South African actor known internationally for his lead role in the 2005 film Tsotsi—which earned South Africa its first Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film—has passed away at the age of 40.

His talent agency, MLA, confirmed the news on Tuesday, mourning the loss of one of South Africa’s “most gifted and beloved actors.”

MLA CEO Nina Morris Lee praised Chweneyagae’s dedication to nurturing future generations of artists, saying his passion would remain an essential part of his legacy. No details about the cause of death were provided.

Chweneyagae’s career, spanning over 30 years, included work in theater, television, and film. His standout performance in Tsotsi, adapted from a novel by renowned South African playwright Athol Fugard and directed by Gavin Hood, brought him international fame.

Beyond acting, Chweneyagae was a talented writer and director. He co-wrote the internationally praised stage play Relativity alongside Paul Grootboom.

The South African government paid tribute to his significant contributions to the film, television, and theater industries, expressing grief over losing a storyteller whose talent deeply touched audiences. A message on social media stated, “Your legacy will live on through the powerful stories you told.”

The South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) also honored Chweneyagae, calling him a “true legend of South African cinema” and remembering him as a “powerhouse performer” who left a lasting impact.

Fikile Mbalula, secretary general of South Africa’s ruling party, the ANC, offered condolences and described Chweneyagae as a “giant of South African film and theatre.” Mbalula highlighted his enduring legacy through works like Tsotsi and The River, sending sympathies to his family, friends, and all touched by his talent.
