Belgian gymnast Nina Derwael, who made history by winning Olympic gold on the uneven bars in Tokyo 2021, has announced her retirement from the sport at the age of 25.

Her decision comes just weeks after a standout performance at the European Championships in June, where she secured two more titles. According to Belgium’s national gymnastics federation, the double gold marked a fitting and final chapter to her impressive career.

“Nina’s double European gold was the last highlight of her long and incredibly successful journey in gymnastics,” the federation noted, calling it the “perfect time” for her to step away from competition.

Derwael has been a dominant force in artistic gymnastics, especially on the uneven bars. She became world champion in 2018 and 2019, cementing her place among the best in the world.

In her own words, Derwael explained that she has achieved everything she set out to do. “I’ve proven what I’m capable of,” she said. Citing growing concerns about the toll on her body, she reflected, “Lately, I kept asking myself, ‘Isn’t it enough? Is it worth risking my body further?’ And I’ve come to the conclusion—it is enough.”

Derwael now leaves the sport on a high note, having inspired a generation of gymnasts with her precision, grace, and mental strength.
