Nick Cushing, the head coach of New York City FC, has been dismissed from his position as the club moves in a new direction. This decision comes amid growing speculation that Cushing could replace Jonas Eidevall as head coach of Arsenal’s Women’s Super League team.
Cushing, who previously managed Manchester City’s women’s team and led them to a WSL title in 2016, had been linked to the Arsenal job. Earlier this month, he had stated that he had not been in contact with Arsenal and was committed to staying with New York City FC for the 2025 season. However, the club has now chosen to part ways with him, expressing gratitude for his contributions but stating that they believe a change is necessary as they prepare for the upcoming season and beyond.
New York City FC has expressed their gratitude towards Nick Cushing, thanking him for his contributions to the club and wishing him and his family the best in their future endeavors.
Cushing’s departure comes amid ongoing speculation that he could replace Jonas Eidevall as head coach of Arsenal’s Women’s Super League team. Arsenal has been without a permanent manager since Eidevall resigned on October 15, following a defeat to Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium. Since then, interim manager Renee Slegers has led the team to six wins in seven matches, including securing a spot in the Women’s Champions League quarter-finals.
Cushing, 40, joined New York City as an assistant coach in 2020 and became head coach in 2022. During his time in charge, he helped the team finish sixth in the MLS and reach the playoff semi-finals.
