Former House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., successfully underwent hip replacement surgery after injuring her hip during a trip to Luxembourg, her office confirmed in a statement on Saturday.

Pelosi’s spokesperson, Ian Krager, said in the statement, “Earlier this morning, Speaker Emerita Pelosi underwent a successful hip replacement and is recovering well.” He added that Pelosi expressed gratitude for the care she received, thanking the U.S. military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the medical team at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg for their excellent care and kindness.

At 84 years old, Pelosi was hospitalized on Friday while traveling with a bipartisan congressional delegation to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. Reports from various news outlets indicated that she had fallen down a flight of stairs.

Rep. Derrick Van Orden’s press office stated that he was near Pelosi when she “fell during an official event.”

Pelosi’s incident follows a similar one involving Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who sprained his wrist and cut his face after falling on Tuesday in Washington.
