Just two weeks after hitting theaters, A Minecraft Movie has become the top-grossing Hollywood release of 2025, raking in over $550 million globally. The Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment production earned another $80.6 million this weekend alone, following its record-breaking $300 million worldwide debut.

Despite lukewarm reviews from critics (a 46% score on Rotten Tomatoes) and a modest “B+” grade from audiences via CinemaScore, the film continues to dominate. Directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, Minecraft dropped just 50% in domestic ticket sales from its opening weekend — a notable achievement for such a major launch.

The movie’s momentum is helping revitalize the box office after a sluggish start to the year. According to data from Comscore, total ticket sales this weekend were double what they were during the same period in 2024. Prior to Minecraft’s release, revenues were trailing last year by 11%, but have now nearly caught up. That said, 2025’s earnings still lag 31% behind those of 2019.

New releases couldn’t come close to matching Minecraft’s numbers, though several had strong openings. Angel Studios’ animated faith-based film The King of Kings earned $19.1 million across 3,200 theaters, claiming second place. Featuring voice work by Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh, and Uma Thurman, the film received an “A+” CinemaScore and is expected to see continued success as Easter approaches.

Another release targeting Christian audiences, The Chosen: Last Supper (Part 3), brought in $6.2 million from 2,296 theaters.

Meanwhile, Disney’s The Amateur, a spy thriller starring Rami Malek as a CIA cryptographer on a personal mission for justice, debuted with $15 million in North America and $17.2 million internationally. Despite the strong cast, critics found the $60 million production to be a less-than-effective vehicle for Malek, who also served as a producer.

A24’s Warfare, co-directed by Alex Garland and Navy SEAL veteran Ray Mendoza, opened with $8.3 million. The film, inspired by a real 2006 military operation during the Iraq War, received critical acclaim for its authentic portrayal of combat. With a modest $20 million budget, it’s seen as a solid start for the gritty war drama.

Blumhouse’s thriller Drop, directed by Christopher Landon and starring Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar, earned $7.5 million from 3,085 theaters. The low-budget film, which debuted at SXSW and cost under $10 million to make, tells the story of a single mom whose first date turns terrifying when she receives a series of disturbing messages.
