Former Meta official’s ‘explosive’ memoir about the social media giant to be published next week

An insider account described as an “explosive dispatch” covering “seven critical years” at Facebook/Meta is set to be released next week.

Flatiron Books announced on Wednesday that the memoir, titled Careless People, will be published on Tuesday. The book is written by Sarah Wynn-Williams, former director of global public policy at Meta, who departed from the company—then known as Facebook—in 2018.

According to the publisher, Careless People provides a behind-the-scenes look at Meta’s boardrooms, private jets, and high-level meetings with world leaders. It explores the decision-making and priorities of key executives, including Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, and Joel Kaplan.

Wynn-Williams portrays these figures as deeply flawed, self-serving, and indifferent to the consequences of their actions. The book claims they prioritized their own interests while disregarding the impact on others, painting a picture of an executive team described as reckless and unconcerned with the costs borne by others for their success.

Flatiron Books stated that Careless People will provide an in-depth look at Mark Zuckerberg’s attempts to expand Meta’s presence in China, as well as Sarah Wynn-Williams’ efforts to push the company to address hate speech and misinformation on its platforms.

The book will also include accounts of workplace harassment and misogyny, shedding light on the challenges faced by employees. Wynn-Williams details the intense pressures and personal sacrifices required to balance work and motherhood during the same period when Sheryl Sandberg was gaining global recognition for encouraging women to “Lean In.”
