Lionel Messi has been fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Soccer (MLS) for breaching the league’s policy on raising hands to the face, head, or neck of an opponent. The MLS Disciplinary Committee imposed the fine on the 37-year-old Inter Miami forward after an incident following a 2-2 draw with New York City FC on February 22. Messi was seen approaching a member of the opposing coaching staff and placing his hand on the back of their neck.

In a similar case, Messi’s teammate, Luis Suarez, was also fined for breaching the same MLS policy. Suarez was penalized for pinching the back of New York City FC player Birk Risa’s neck during halftime.
