Daniil Medvedev has been fined a total of $76,000 for his behavior during the first two rounds of the Australian Open. The fines were announced by tournament officials on Sunday, just two days after Medvedev’s unexpected second-round defeat.
In his first-round match, Medvedev, who won the U.S. Open in 2021, became frustrated after a tough five-set win over Kasidit Samrej, who was ranked 418th. Medvedev repeatedly hit a small camera suspended in the net with his racket, earning him a fine of $10,000 for the outburst.
In his second-round loss to 19-year-old American qualifier Learner Tien, Medvedev showed similar signs of frustration, leading to a point penalty. He was fined $66,000 for various code violations during the match. One notable incident occurred when Medvedev was broken to fall behind 4-3 in the second set. He threw his racket across the court, sliding it toward an advertising panel near his bench.
Throughout his matches, Daniil Medvedev had several outbursts of anger. He hit a ball against the back wall, knocked over a camera behind the baseline, and punched his racket bag. Additionally, during the second-set tiebreaker of his second-round match, he expressed frustration after being called for two consecutive foot-faults, which led to a double fault.
The second-round match, which lasted 4 hours and 49 minutes, concluded just before 3 a.m. on Friday. Medvedev, who was seeded No. 5 at the Australian Open, has been a finalist in three of the past four years at Melbourne Park, including last year.
This was his first tournament of the year, following the recent birth of his second child. However, the 28-year-old Russian did not seem to play at his best throughout the match.
