The Masters has increased its prize money by $1 million for this year, bringing the total purse to $21 million, with $4.2 million awarded to the winner. In addition to the cash prize, the victor will receive something many find even more valuable: the iconic green jacket.

Last year, Scottie Scheffler took home $3.6 million as the winner. Players finishing in 50th place will receive $52,920, with smaller amounts given to those who made the cut but finished lower. Even if players miss the cut, they still receive $25,000, a move that puts the Masters ahead of other tournaments like the U.S. Open, which offered $10,000 to professionals who didn’t make the cut last year.

Prize money at golf’s four major tournaments has been gradually increasing over the years. A decade ago, Jordan Spieth earned $1.8 million for his Masters win when the total purse was $10 million.

While the Masters’ purse has grown, it’s still smaller than the Players Championship, which boasts a $25 million prize fund. Rory McIlroy recently won $4.5 million in that tournament. Next week, the PGA Tour heads to the RBC Heritage in South Carolina, which has a $20 million purse, with $3.6 million awarded to the winner as part of the signature event.
