Manchester United will exercise a one-year option to extend Harry Maguire’s contract, keeping the defender at the club until the end of the 2025-26 season, according to manager Ruben Amorim. Maguire’s original contract was set to expire at the end of this season.
Amorim confirmed the decision during a press conference, revealing that he had spoken with Maguire earlier and told him he needed to improve both his on-field performance and his leadership skills. The manager emphasized that the team required Maguire’s contributions, stating, “We need him a lot right now, so we’re happy to activate the option.”
Maguire, 31, has been with United since joining from Leicester in 2019 and was previously the team’s captain before losing the armband to Bruno Fernandes. Amorim added that the team is lacking leaders, and while Maguire is already a leader, he needs to further develop in that role and improve his game.
The manager also mentioned that winger Amad Diallo is close to signing a contract extension with the club.
Currently, Manchester United sits in 14th place in the Premier League, ahead of their upcoming match against leaders Liverpool on Sunday.
