Liverpool have parted ways with manager Matt Beard, ending his second stint with the club while they sit in seventh place in the Women’s Super League. Beard, 47, had an impressive first spell at Liverpool, leading the team to two WSL titles. After rejoining the club in 2021, he successfully guided them back to the top division in his first season.
Last season, Beard helped Liverpool finish fourth in the league, and currently, the team sits mid-table, nine points clear of bottom-placed Crystal Palace. The club expressed gratitude for Beard’s contributions, particularly for securing promotion to the WSL in 2022. However, they emphasized the need to build on that momentum and believed a managerial change was necessary for future success.
Amber Whiteley will take over as interim manager, and the club has already begun the search for a permanent replacement.
Beard had previously led Liverpool to back-to-back WSL titles in 2013 and 2014. After leaving the club in 2016, he spent a brief time in the National Women’s Soccer League with Boston Breakers, followed by a stint at West Ham and an interim role at Bristol City. He returned to Liverpool in 2021 and successfully led the team back to the WSL and to a top-four finish in the following season. However, a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on February 16 marked his final match in charge, with the team having lost seven out of 14 league games this season.
