Lindsey Vonn capped off her comeback season at the age of 40 with a second-place finish in a World Cup super-G race, which was won by Swiss skier Lara Gut-Behrami.
Vonn, racing on the challenging Challenger course at the World Cup finals, showed her trademark skill and speed, earning a standing ovation from the crowd after noticing her performance on the scoreboard. This marked Vonn’s first World Cup podium finish since March 2018, when she placed third in a super-G in Are, Sweden.
Vonn returned to competition this season after undergoing partial knee replacement surgery. The second-place finish in the race was her 138th career World Cup podium in 408 starts. She is now just one start away from tying the record for the most World Cup starts by a female skier, held by Austria’s Renate Goetschl.
Gut-Behrami took first place with a time of 1:12.35, edging Vonn by 1.29 seconds to secure the season-long super-G crystal globe title, surpassing Italy’s Federica Brignone. Gut-Behrami had trailed Brignone by five points heading into the final race, but took calculated risks that paid off. Brignone finished third, 1.33 seconds behind Gut-Behrami.
The final season standings for super-G were: Gut-Behrami in first, Brignone second, and Sofia Goggia of Italy in third.
On the previous day, Brignone clinched the downhill title after a race cancellation, also securing the overall title for the season.
