UConn freshman Liam McNeeley is nearing his return after a month-long absence due to a high ankle sprain. Huskies head coach Dan Hurley said he expects McNeeley to be ready to play on Friday when UConn faces St. John’s. Hurley added that McNeeley should be at full strength, provided there are no further setbacks. McNeeley, who has been averaging 13.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, hasn’t played since January 1.
Despite missing McNeeley, UConn (16-6, 8-3 Big East) has managed to go 5-3 in his absence. In their most recent game, the Huskies picked up a significant win over Marquette, with Solo Ball leading the way with 25 points and 10 rebounds. UConn shot an impressive 59.5% from the field and 12 of 19 on three-pointers, though they also committed a season-high 25 turnovers.
McNeeley isn’t the only UConn player dealing with injuries. Backup guard Ahmad Nowell has been sidelined for two games due to an ankle issue. Meanwhile, Hassan Diarra played through a leg problem in Saturday’s game, contributing five points and seven assists in nearly 25 minutes of action.
Coach Dan Hurley expressed concern about Hassan Diarra’s condition, saying, “We can’t afford to have him hobbling around like that.” With a break in their schedule before Friday’s game against St. John’s, the Huskies are hopeful that the extra time will help them get closer to full health. Hurley added, “I think we’re going to come into the next game looking a lot healthier.”
