Footballers Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis have joyfully announced the arrival of their first child together. Kerr, who plays for Chelsea and represents Australia, and Mewis, a forward for West Ham and the United States, shared a heartfelt Instagram post introducing their newborn son.
“Our little man is here, Jagger Mewis-Kerr,” Kerr wrote in the post, accompanied by a photo of the couple holding their baby.
The couple had revealed in November that they were expecting, and their announcement was met with both support and criticism online. Some homophobic comments were made in response to the post, which led to condemnation from across the women’s football community.
Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor condemned the abusive remarks, calling them “unacceptable.” Millie Bright, Chelsea’s captain, voiced her concerns, stating that more needs to be done by social media platforms to address such abuse.
Despite the negativity, the post received an outpouring of support from many in the women’s football world, including Bright, and Kerr’s Australian teammates Katrina Gorry and Caitlin Foord.
Kerr, 31, and Mewis, 34, have been a couple since 2021 and got engaged in November 2023. Mewis, who carried their baby, played only once for West Ham in the 2024-25 Women’s Super League season before her pregnancy, while Kerr has been recovering from a serious knee injury and has not yet appeared for Chelsea this season.
Earlier this year, the couple was in the media spotlight when Kerr faced trial for racially aggravated harassment, but she was found not guilty. Mewis supported her partner throughout the trial, attending every day and providing testimony in her defense.
