First Lady Jill Biden announces she is leaving her teaching post after historic tenure

First Lady Jill Biden announced on Monday that she is stepping down from her teaching role at Northern Virginia Community College. During a virtual event to thank teachers, she shared that she had taught her final class of the semester last Thursday, marking the end of her teaching career at the college. Biden expressed her deep love for teaching, explaining that it was the reason she continued to work full-time as a professor while also serving as First Lady.

This announcement comes as she prepares to depart from the White House, following President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign in July and the victory of former President Donald Trump in the presidential election. The virtual address she gave to educators was reminiscent of her first official event as First Lady in 2021, where she spoke alongside leaders from the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers.

Pringle expressed her confidence in Jill Biden’s lasting impact, stating, “I trust you know that the legacy you’ve created won’t end as you leave the White House. You’ll keep making a difference because, believe me, I’ll be reaching out to you.”

Jill Biden The First FLOTUS to Maintain a Career While in the White House

Jill Biden made history as the first First Lady in 231 years to continue working in her teaching role while serving in the White House. She holds four degrees, including two master’s degrees and a doctorate in education. Her students affectionately referred to her as “Dr. B.” Biden also taught during her time as Second Lady under the Obama administration. In a previous interview, she shared that she would request her Secret Service agents to dress as college students to avoid drawing attention and disrupting her classes.

When Jill Biden took on the role of First Lady, she was determined to demonstrate that the position could be whatever she chose to make it. Ahead of the 2020 Democratic National Convention, she shared in a post, “Teaching is not what I do, it’s who I am.”
