A JetBlue flight traveling from Haiti to New York was reportedly struck by gunfire on Monday, November 11. Despite the incident, no injuries were reported, and the flight proceeded as planned. However, after the aircraft landed safely at New York’s JFK Airport, a post-flight inspection revealed that a bullet had hit the plane’s exterior. JetBlue has confirmed that it is investigating the matter in cooperation with relevant authorities.
In response to the situation, JetBlue has suspended flights to and from Haiti until December 2. The airline is closely monitoring the security situation in Haiti and has waived change fees for affected passengers.
Haiti has been facing ongoing civil unrest for several months, prompting the U.S. State Department to issue a “Do Not Travel” advisory for American citizens in September, which remains active.
On the same day as the JetBlue incident, a Spirit Airlines flight was also struck by gunfire while approaching Port-au-Prince. The plane diverted to the Dominican Republic, and one crew member was injured. In response to the safety concerns, Spirit Airlines has waived change fees for passengers planning to travel to Haiti, as has American Airlines, the only other U.S. airline with flights to the country.
