Jay North, best known for his role as the mischievous Dennis the Menace on the CBS sitcom that aired from 1959 to 1963, has passed away at 73. He died Sunday at his home in Lake Butler, Florida, after a battle with colon cancer.
North was just 6 years old when he landed the iconic role of Dennis, the spirited troublemaker from Hank Ketcham’s beloved comic strip. His character’s antics often left his retired neighbor, George Wilson (played by Joseph Kearns), exasperated, while his understanding parents were portrayed by Herbert Anderson and Gloria Henry. The show, a staple of Sunday nights, remained popular in syndication for years after its cancellation.
Beyond “Dennis the Menace,” North had guest roles in TV shows like The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Lucy Show, My Three Sons, Lassie, and even The Simpsons. His film credits include Maya (1966), The Teacher (1974), and Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003).
Longtime friend Laurie Jacobson and booking agent Bonnie Vent described North as having “a heart as big as a mountain,” with a habit of ending every conversation with, “I love you with all my heart.”
North is survived by his third wife, Cindy, and three stepdaughters.
