Ivan Juric was appointed as the new manager of Southampton on Saturday, tasked with the challenge of keeping the team in the Premier League.
Juric replaces Russell Martin, who was dismissed last week after the team found itself at the bottom of the table.
“We are focused on the fight for survival… and believe this appointment will give us the grit and determination needed to improve results on the pitch,” Southampton said in a statement.
The 49-year-old Juric has signed an 18-month contract and was most recently with Roma for a brief two-month stint.
Southampton has struggled, losing six of their last seven matches and sitting nine points adrift of safety.
“It’s a huge challenge, but I’m optimistic because I see a team that can perform better,” Juric said. “I want an aggressive team, and I believe Southampton’s fans will appreciate that.”
