India’s official Oscar entry, which failed to make the cut, wins big at major Bollywood awards show

The film that was submitted as India’s official Oscar entry but failed to make the final list of nominees has gone on to dominate the 2025 International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards, celebrating excellence in India’s film industry.

Kiran Rao’s critically praised film “Laapataa Ladies” — rebranded as “Lost Ladies” for its Oscar campaign — emerged as the top winner at the IIFA Awards, taking home 10 awards, including Best Picture and Best Direction.

The 2023 comedy revolves around two veiled brides who are accidentally swapped during a train journey. The film explores themes of patriarchy and gender roles, marking a departure from the traditional male-centered narrative often seen in mainstream Indian cinema.

“I feel incredibly privileged to win an award for a film like ‘Laapataa Ladies.’ It’s been an amazing night, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to make such a film,” said Rao in her acceptance speech.

Rao’s film, which stands out from most Bollywood productions that usually include song-and-dance sequences, violence, and melodrama, also triumphed in categories such as Best Story, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress in a Leading Role.

The IIFA Awards ceremony, held annually, kicked off in the western city of Jaipur on Saturday and wrapped up on Sunday.

India’s biggest film stars were part of the glamorous event, with Bollywood icons Shah Rukh Khan and Shahid Kapoor among those who performed during the ceremony. The event was hosted by renowned director and producer Karan Johar, along with actor Kartik Aaryan.

The awards ceremony also serves as a platform for Indian celebrities to flaunt their fashion, and this year was no different. Celebrities like Madhuri Dixit, Katrina Kaif, and Kareena Kapoor Khan made a statement with their stylish outfits on the green carpet.
