Argentinian President Javier Milei has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Genesis Prize by Israel in recognition of his strong support for the country, organizers announced on Tuesday. Since taking office, Milei has pledged to relocate Argentina’s embassy to Jerusalem, aligning with a small group of nations that recognize the city as Israel’s capital. He has also been a vocal supporter of Israel at the United Nations and has committed to seeking justice for the bombings of Israeli and Jewish targets in Argentina during the 1990s.
Milei expressed his honor at receiving the prize and praised the resilience of the Jewish people, calling it a key element in the strong relationship between Argentina and Israel. He vowed to work on further strengthening the ties between the two nations.
The $1 million Genesis Prize is awarded annually to individuals for their professional achievements, contributions to humanity, and dedication to Jewish values. Previous laureates have used the prize money for charitable causes. Milei has stated he plans to donate his award to initiatives that combat antisemitism in Argentina and globally.
Last month, Milei marked the completion of his first year in office. At the outset, his lack of experience, messy hairstyle, provocative remarks, and strong attachments to his late dog, the Rolling Stones, and the free market didn’t instill much confidence in a nation with a history of unsuccessful economic reforms.
Milei’s tough austerity policies have resulted in increased unemployment, and poverty has risen. However, inflation in Argentina is starting to ease, and Milei’s approval rating remains above 50%.
The organizers of the Genesis Prize noted that this is the first time a head of state has received the honor. Genesis Prize Chairman Stan Polovets remarked, “Despite the significant challenges in his own country, he made it a top priority to support Israel during its most challenging times.” Milei has also expressed a strong connection to Judaism and hinted that he might consider converting in the future.
The Genesis Prize is typically presented at a gala in Jerusalem every June, with Israel’s prime minister in attendance.
Past recipients of the prize include businessman and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, actor Michael Douglas, violinist Itzhak Perlman, sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor, filmmaker Steven Spielberg, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, former Soviet political prisoner Natan Sharansky, and actress Barbra Streisand.
