Ford is recalling nearly 274,000 of its Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs across the United States because of a potential brake issue that could increase the risk of a crash.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem stems from the possibility that front brake lines in affected vehicles may come into contact with the engine air cleaner outlet pipe due to a possible installation error. This contact can lead to brake fluid leakage and, in some cases, reduced braking performance.
The recall includes 223,315 Ford Expeditions and 50,474 Lincoln Navigators from model years 2022 through 2024. While Ford estimates that only about 1% of these vehicles are actually affected, the issue has been taken seriously. As of April 17, the company had received 45 warranty claims involving front brake line leaks, although no accidents or injuries have been reported.
To fix the issue, Ford and Lincoln dealerships will inspect the front brake lines of impacted vehicles. If needed, they will replace either the brake line or the air cleaner outlet pipe at no cost to owners. Dealerships were set to be notified starting Wednesday, and vehicle owners will begin receiving official recall letters between May 26 and May 30.
In the meantime, drivers can visit the NHTSA website or use Ford’s recall lookup tool to check if their specific vehicle is part of the recall. The reference number for this recall is 25S47.
Drivers may notice symptoms such as increased brake pedal travel — meaning they have to press the pedal harder to stop the vehicle. A leaking brake line can also cause brake fluid levels to drop, potentially triggering the red brake warning light on the dashboard.
A Ford representative declined to provide further comments on the matter.
