Former NBA center Vlade Divac underwent emergency surgery after breaking his hip in a motorcycle accident in Montenegro, hospital officials said Friday.
The incident occurred Thursday on a road near Montenegro’s Adriatic coast. Divac, 57, suffered a fractured hip and received an artificial hip implant during surgery.
“A surgical procedure was performed during the day,” said Ljubica Mitrovic, a hospital spokesperson in Risan. “He is in stable condition and is being closely monitored by medical staff.”
Standing 7-foot-1 (2.16m), Divac began and finished his 16-year NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He also played for the Charlotte Hornets and Sacramento Kings and was an All-Star in 2001. After retiring as a player, he served as general manager of the Kings.
Joining the Lakers in 1989, Divac was among the first European players to enter the NBA. He became the first player born and trained outside the U.S. to appear in over 1,000 NBA games. In 2019, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Divac has also served two terms as the head of Serbia’s Olympic Committee.
