Elton John says he has lost his eyesight

Elton John revealed that he is still unable to see, months after experiencing a severe eye infection. During a gala performance of The Devil Wears Prada musical in London on Sunday, he expressed gratitude to his husband, David Furnish, calling him “my rock.”

John shared with the audience, “I haven’t been able to attend many of the previews because, as you know, I’ve lost my eyesight. It’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it, and tonight, it sounded great.” He also wrote the score for the musical.

In a recent interview, John mentioned that the vision problem has been impacting his ability to work.

Elton John shared that he lost the vision in his right eye in July due to an infection while in the south of France. He explained that it’s been four months since he has been unable to see, and his left eye is also in poor condition.

Despite this, he remains hopeful that things will improve. “There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but right now, I’m stuck,” he said. “I can do something like this (the interview), but going into the studio to record is a challenge because, for starters, I can’t see the lyrics.”

Elton John, 77, first addressed his vision issues in September, revealing on his Instagram that he had been struggling with a severe eye infection, which had left him with limited vision in one eye.

He explained, “I am healing, but it’s a very slow process, and it will take time for my sight to return to the affected eye.” He expressed gratitude towards the “excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family” for their support during this time.

John mentioned that he had been quietly recovering at home over the summer and felt optimistic about the progress he had made in his healing journey.

Although John retired from touring in 2023 after decades of live performances, he still composed the music for the musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada. The musical is based on the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger, which was also made into a movie in 2006.
