Dutch footballer Quincy Promes was extradited from Dubai to the Netherlands on Friday, where he is set to serve a prison sentence related to drug trafficking, according to the Dutch public prosecution service.

Officials confirmed that Promes is now in Dutch custody and being transported back to the country. The 33-year-old forward, who played 50 times for the national team and scored seven goals, has faced multiple legal troubles in recent years that have brought his football career to a halt.

Promes was convicted in absentia last year and sentenced to six years in prison for his role in cocaine smuggling. The Amsterdam District Court determined that he had been involved in the trafficking of several hundred kilograms of cocaine in 2020. His legal team has consistently denied the charges.

In addition to the drug case, Promes was also found guilty in 2023 of stabbing his cousin in the leg during an altercation. He received an 18-month prison sentence for that incident. Both convictions are currently under appeal.

Once a standout player for clubs like Ajax and Sevilla, Promes had been playing for Spartak Moscow and residing in Russia from 2021 until last year. He was reportedly detained in Dubai while Spartak was visiting for a series of friendly matches. Recently, he had joined United FC, a second-division team in Dubai.
