Disney Cruise Line has increased its recommended gratuity rates for passengers. The standard rate is now $16 per person per day, up from $14.50. For guests staying in concierge staterooms and suites, the new rate is $27.25 per person per day, compared to the previous rate of $23.50.

The new rates went into effect on Wednesday.

These gratuities, which can be paid in advance, are shared among various crew members, such as dining room servers and stateroom attendants. Disney’s website explains that it’s customary to offer gratuities to acknowledge the exceptional service guests will receive during their cruise.

If passengers choose not to pre-pay the gratuities, the charges will be automatically added to their onboard accounts. Those who wish to modify or remove the gratuity amounts can do so by visiting Guest Services while on board.

Disney last adjusted its recommended gratuity rates in July 2022, and it’s not the only cruise line to make such changes recently. Royal Caribbean International also increased its gratuity rates in November.

Cruise lines often increase gratuity fees in response to “external influences” like inflation or shifts in the economy, according to Danny Genung, CEO of travel agency Harr Travel.

“When you consider the rising costs of hotels, transportation, fuel, food, and more, it’s really just a normal reaction,” Genung explained. “This helps to compensate employees and offset the rising costs.”
