Stephen Curry became the 26th player in NBA history to reach 25,000 career points during the third quarter of the Golden State Warriors’ 115-110 win over the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night.
As he made his way to the locker room after the game, Curry yelled, “BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!” — a nod to his teammate Draymond Green, who is known for shouting “boom” after hitting a 3-pointer. Green had hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 35 seconds left in the game and also secured the game ball for Curry. However, Curry jokingly said Green would keep it.
“He’s going to keep it for me. I heard he has some of KD’s memorabilia,” Curry said, referencing his former teammate Kevin Durant.
Curry, who will turn 37 next Friday, surpassed the 25,000-point mark with a 3-pointer at 8:32 in the third quarter. He was then honored with a warm ovation during a timeout with 5:42 left in the game.
Curry finished the game with 32 points, bringing his career total to 25,017. He made 8 of 22 shots and converted all 12 of his free throws.
Curry wasn’t focused on tracking his milestones during the game.
“It was actually a surprise. I knew I was getting close, but I didn’t really think about it until I heard it during the game,” Curry said. “Tim Roye told me after the game that only 10 guys—well, now 10—have done it with one franchise. That’s pretty special. The names on that list are legends in basketball history, so that’s really cool.”
Curry’s next major achievement is becoming the first player in NBA history to hit 4,000 three-pointers. He made four on Saturday and is just seven away from the milestone.
“It’s crazy, crazy,” said coach Steve Kerr. “It feels like 25,000 3-pointers actually. It’s incredible. Night after night, and tonight wasn’t his best shooting performance. But I really admired how he played through fatigue and tough defense, getting to the line 12 times. Even when his shot wasn’t falling, he was still brilliant. That’s what makes a great player.”
