Chris Jasper, a renowned singer-songwriter who played a key role in The Isley Brothers’ success during their most iconic years, passed away on Sunday at the age of 73.

His death follows a cancer diagnosis in 2024, which was shared by his family on his Facebook page. The specific type of cancer was not disclosed.

The family statement expressed, “He will be deeply missed, and his legacy will live on as an inspiration for generations.”

A classically trained musician and composer, Jasper contributed significantly to The Isley Brothers’ music from 1973 to 1983. Alongside Ernie and Marvin Isley, he helped transform the group from a traditional vocal trio into a six-member R&B and funk powerhouse.

Chris Jasper’s songwriting and influence were integral to hits like “For the Love of You,” “Between the Sheets,” and “Fight the Power.” The Isley Brothers’ unique sound in the 1970s and 1980s, blending smooth R&B grooves with lively electronic elements, played a key role in cementing their place as musical innovators.

In 1984, after The Isley Brothers disbanded, Chris Jasper formed Isley-Jasper-Isley with two of the Isley brothers. The group enjoyed success in 1985 with the hit song “Caravan of Love,” a track filled with themes of peace and love.

Jasper launched a solo career in 1987, releasing nearly two dozen R&B albums through Gold City Records, a label he founded. His music continues to be influential, with samples appearing in tracks by artists like Queen Latifah, Tupac, Biggie, and Aaliyah.

Chris Jasper’s remarkable career earned him recognition in both the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022 and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 as a member of The Isley Brothers. In 2014, he was also honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, again as part of the iconic group.

The Facebook post shared by his family highlighted Chris Jasper not only for his musical accomplishments but also for being a devoted and loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Margie Jasper, a New York-based attorney and author, as well as their three sons: Michael, Nicholas, and Christopher.
