The “chip shop diva” who bacame a global TikTok star

Destiny Harold, known as the “chip shop diva,” has gained widespread fame through a series of viral TikTok videos. The clips, filmed by her colleague Mitch Key, showcase her adding a touch of glamour to her job at Merchants fish and chip shop in Bewdley, Worcestershire.

Together, Destiny and Mitch have amassed millions of views online, boosting the shop’s reputation with five-star reviews and attracting many new customers. Harold, who works part-time at the chippy while pursuing her nursing studies, explained that their initial goal was simply to promote the shop’s food, never anticipating the huge response it would receive.

Merchants has turned into a popular sensation on TikTok, with its most-viewed video reaching 25 million views.

Destiny Harold, the teenager behind the viral clips, mentioned that the shop has become busier since gaining online fame. She said she doesn’t mind her newfound status as a local celebrity.

“Customers have been asking for pictures and everything,” Harold shared. “Some even come in just to buy a can of soda just to meet me.”

Owner Antony Akathiotis is focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of his “hardworking” employee, Destiny Harold.

He told the Dudley News that while Destiny and Mitch work exceptionally well together, he is concerned about the risks of social media. “It can be a scary business,” Akathiotis said, adding that he wants to make sure they are taking steps to protect Destiny.

The TikTok project was created by Mitch Key, who has been working at the restaurant for about three years. Initially, the account was set up to showcase the shop’s food, like its famous giant cod meal, but it quickly gained massive attention.

“We’ve always wanted to get the staff involved and highlight the real, human side of the business,” Key explained.

Both Destiny and Mitch hinted that there are more surprises in store through their upcoming videos.

The popularity of their clips has even led to musical tributes, including one that was turned into a dance track. This success follows in the footsteps of the Binley Mega Chippy in Coventry, which also went viral after a fan created a TikTok featuring a catchy jingle.
