Chiefs’ Xavier Worthy arrested in Texas on assault charge

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was arrested on Friday and booked on assault charges. According to jail records from Williamson County, Texas, Worthy faces a charge of assault against a family or household member for allegedly impeding their breathing or circulation.

In response, the Chiefs released a statement on Saturday morning, acknowledging the situation and stating, “We are aware and gathering information.”

The charge is classified as a third-degree felony in Texas, which occurs when someone “intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly impedes the normal breathing or circulation of the blood” of another person by applying pressure to the throat or neck or blocking the person’s nose or mouth. The charge carries a penalty of two to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000.

The 21-year-old Xavier Worthy, who previously played college football at the University of Texas, was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He gained attention at the NFL Scouting Combine after setting a record for the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.21 seconds.

The NFL issued a statement on Saturday, saying, “We are aware of the situation and have been in communication with the club.”

In his rookie season, Worthy recorded 59 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdowns. He also rushed for three touchdowns and added three more touchdown catches during the playoffs.
