Chelsea completed an impressive treble on Sunday with a 3-0 win over defending champions Manchester United in the Women’s FA Cup final. This victory added the FA Cup to the Women’s Super League and League Cup titles they had already secured this season.
Sandy Baltimore was the standout player, scoring twice, while Catarina Macário also found the net. Baltimore’s first goal came in the 45th minute when Celin Bizet fouled Erin Cuthbert in the penalty area, and Baltimore confidently converted the spot kick in front of United’s supporters.
The second half saw United come out strong, creating opportunities through Elisabeth Terland and Ella Toone. However, Chelsea kept them at bay and doubled their lead in the 84th minute when Macário headed in a free kick from Baltimore.
The final goal came in the 91st minute when Wieke Kaptein intercepted a loose pass from Leah Galton, crossed the ball for Baltimore, who skillfully flicked it past Lisa Naalsund and finished it into the net.
Alexis Ohanian, the founder of Reddit, was present at Wembley along with his wife, tennis icon Serena Williams. Ohanian had recently invested £20 million ($26.6 million) into Chelsea. He expressed his ambitions for the club, saying, “The sky is the limit,” and aiming to make the club the best in the world.
In contrast, Manchester United’s minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, was absent from the match after also missing last year’s final, fueling criticism about his lack of commitment to the women’s team.
This victory marked Chelsea’s sixth FA Cup title, their first since 2023, and it caps off a fantastic season for manager Sonia Bompastor, who took over in the summer. Bompastor had set curfews for the players, but after achieving the treble, she remarked, “The players really deserve to celebrate.”
The win marked the second domestic treble in Chelsea’s history, with the first coming in the 2020-21 season. Only Arsenal has achieved this feat more times, with five such trebles in their history.
