Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, underwent another surgery on Sunday morning in Brasília, according to a medical update from his doctors.
The 68-year-old conservative leader has been hospitalized since Friday due to a bowel obstruction, a complication linked to the long-term effects of a stabbing he suffered during a 2018 campaign event. Medical staff at DF Star Hospital determined that imaging tests showed a need for surgery to remove intestinal adhesions and repair the abdominal wall.
Since the 2018 attack, Bolsonaro has experienced ongoing health issues and has undergone multiple surgeries, including several during his time in office from 2019 to 2022.
Bolsonaro was initially admitted to a hospital in Santa Cruz, a small city in Rio Grande do Norte state, before being transferred to a hospital in Natal, the state capital. On Saturday, his family requested that he be moved to Brasília for further treatment.
At the time of his hospitalization, Bolsonaro had been preparing to tour Brazil’s Northeast region to promote the agenda of his right-wing political party, despite being banned from running in the next presidential election. The Northeast has long been considered a stronghold of current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
