Bill McCartney, the legendary Hall of Fame college football coach who guided the University of Colorado to a national championship in 1990, passed away on Friday night in Boulder, Colorado. He was 84 years old.
According to a statement from McCartney’s family, he passed away after a brave battle with dementia.
McCartney, who was hired as the head coach in 1982, became the winningest coach in Colorado football history, finishing with a 93-55-5 record over 13 seasons. Under his leadership, the Buffaloes claimed the 1990 national championship by defeating Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl and won three Big Eight titles.
Bill McCartney, who coached the 1994 Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
Following his coaching career, McCartney co-founded “Promise Keepers,” a Christian organization. He had four children with his late wife, Lynne.
